LANSING - Abortion Insurance, also known as "Rape Insurance" which has been nicknamed from opposers of this bill, was recently passed by lawmakers of the Michigan Legislation.
This insurance policy will eliminate all insurance plans in the State of Michigan from covering the procedure of an abortion, unless a woman's life may be in great danger.
The law, that has been taken into effect this month, forces women, as well as employers to purchase a separate insurance plan in addition to their current plan, that covers the abortion procedure in any event that a woman was victimized in cases of incest or rape. Otherwise if not purchased, the procedure will not be covered by insurance.
The Michigan Legislature first passed this controversial measure last year, but Governor Rick Snyder vetoed it.
However, the anti-abortion group, Right to Life of Michigan, collected more than 300,000 voter signatures in support of this bill on a petition this year, forcing a second vote on this measure.
Even though Governor Snyder did not approve this law to go into effect, it was passed by two chambers, automatically transforming this bill into state law.
Senator (D) Gretchen Whitmer, representing the Michigan Senate for the 23rd District, has spoken about this issue and has expressed how she can relate to it on a personal level.
“There's no other crime would you say the victim should have planned for this, and paid extra money in case they were victimized by a criminal, there’s none other," Whitmer said.
Whitmer also said that after sharing her story, she received a lot of support from individuals who reached out to her.
“The only way that we are going to change what is going on is if we fight and we raise our voices, and that’s what I’m trying to do and be the voice of so many people out there, because I’m not the only one," she said.
Eight other states also have the similar insurance policy, which bans coverage of abortion.
