MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Multitasking while driving has always been a issue since the invention of the wheel but the recent raise of mobile device usage behind the wheel has lifted the possible dangers to a whole new level.

A statewide phone survey conducted by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) concluded that over 16 percent of drivers admit to texting or sending emails while on the road. This is double the amount of people who admitted to texting in the 2012 survey.

Even though state law prohibits driving while texting, officials believe that the issue will take years to become socially immoral similar to the public view of drunk driving.

Lynn Sutfin, spokesperson for OHSP, stated "...it has become social unacceptable to get behind the wheel if you are drunk. I think that it is one of the things that has to happen with texting. People are going to have to find it socially unacceptable for people to be texting be hind the wheel before perhaps we have some changes."
