MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - A local family spoke at the Meridian Township Planning Commission Public Hearing about a request to house international students in their home.

The Friesen family asked for a Special Use Permit from the Planning Commission to allow them to house up to six international students in their home off Haslett Road.

One international student who knows the Friesen family spoke in support of the group housing proposal and said noise should not be a problem because most international students tend to be more focused on studies than partying.

However, a neighbor of the Friesen family came forward to speak about his concerns if the permit is granted. He said depending on the number of friends each tenant has over could cause excess noise for him and his family.

"We don't really want to be faced with weekly soccer games in our backyard because that's our haven. That is where we hang out and we want quietness back there," said Terry Johnson, whose backyard borders the Friesen property.

The Planning Commission said they will continue discussions about the request to ensure they do not violate the Fair Housing Act on whether or not a homeowner can choose tenants based on their international or student background.
