MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - There has been an increasing number of specialty stores setting up shop in Meridian Township. Some people go for the friendly atmosphere and some go to buy food and goods that would not be available in some of the big name grocery stores.
Mert's Specialty Meats, on Grand River Avenue, is a family owned meat market that buys their meat locally and makes many of their own goods.
"That's the difference between us and the corporate chains, you're going to get a lot more friendly service and chances are you're going to see the same people every time you come in. They're going to know you on a first name basis. I know some of the larger places try to do that pretty well, but I think the biggest benefit of it is not only the familiarity, but knowing that most of your dollars are staying here locally and benefiting people in your community and in your state," said Brandon Decker, owner and operator at Mert's.
Meridian Township has been supportive of new businesses, with its diverse population and opportunity to fill unique gaps in retail.
"Stores have popped up over the years to serve these specific populations and I think that in the community, their really relied upon to provide not only the items, whether it's foodstuffs or other cultural specific products. They really service that specific market," said Associate Planner, Peter Menser. "It's cool to see them side by side with some national franchise or chain and they seem to coexist perfectly well, which is expected, but it's fantastic."
There are now almost ten specialty stores in the Township, offering food and goods from around the world.
