UPDATE: MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - If you're ever inside Travelers' Club International Restaurant and Tuba Museum, it's easy to see what makes it unique. But it's the mural that's painted on the outside that sets it apart from the other businesses in Downtown Okemos. The mural, painted in 2005, was the first of its kind in Meridian Township, and sparked numerous discussions by Township officials over how to regulate them. These discussions were re-ignited this past summer and now the Planning Commission is deciding on regulations that would determine the line between what is art and what is a sign. "We're looking at it through a very specific lens that identifies it more as an artistic expression rather than a commercial message," said Peter Menser, Assistant Planner for Meridian Township. The Planning Commission is expected to vote on provisions regarding murals at their next meeting.
