MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - When D'Destin and Bethany Kaufmann tried to enroll in the new Health Care Plan after the birth of their first child, it wasn't as easy as they expected it to be.

Bethany Kaufmann expressed that she wished she would have been given more of a notice regarding this new Health Care enrollment, so that she would have been more informed going in.

After four or five times of trying to enroll online, Bethany went to the Ingham County Health Department, which she sought assistance from a representative who worked with her in order in to find the most feasible plan for her family, which is based on your financial income.

Several unsuccessful attempts made by the representative, finally lead Bethany to come to the conclusion that the issue of this enrollment process could be the apostrophe in her husband, D'Destin's name. Sure enough, that was the answer.

"It was extremely frustrating because there was no directive, there was no understanding," said Kaufmann.

Bethany also encourages individuals like her and her family, to get help right away, in order to avoid any situations such as the one her family went through.

"With medicaid expansion and the Affordable Care Act, that should make health care accessible to a lot more people than it was before," said Darla Jackson, Human Services Specialist for Meridian Township.

There will be an event at the Meridian Township Municipal Building in the Town Hall room on Feb. 27, 2014 in order to inform the public about this health care plan. The event will take place from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. There will be informative presentations, following open enrollment. All are encouraged to attend.

Open enrollment for the Health Care Plan ends on March 31, 2014.
