MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The proposed fire station on Central Park Drive was not approved at the Planning Commission meeting on Jan. 13.

The proposal will now be sent to the Township Board to decide the future of the new fire station. Township voters approved a 3.5 million dollar millage for the new station in November 2012.

"If we vote this down, then the township will appeal it to the board, and if we vote in favor of this, and i suspect strongly that the residents of Autumn Park will appeal to the board or to court," said Thomas Deits, Vice-Chair of the Planning Commission.

A number of residents from the condominiums across from the proposed site have shown up to the Planning Commission meetings to voice their opinions about why the fire station should go elsewhere. Residents of Autumn Park Condominiums are not opposed to the idea of a new fire station, they are just concerned about the location and the issues it might cause in their lives.

State law requires the Township Board to obtain a two-thirds vote (5 votes), to overturn the Section 61 denial from the Planning Commission. The Township Board will vote on the new fire station at their February 4th meeting.
