MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - A property tax bill is headed to the Senate and could hurt school systems in Michigan. The proposed bill allows banks to receive a tax break on school operating taxes for foreclosed properties. Meridian Township Treasurer, Julie Brixie said that banks have record profits while schools have been cut year after year after year.
"So this is something that isn't going to impact our government directly, but it impacts us indirectly because 78 percent of the people living here in Meridian Township are living here because of the quality of our schools, and so whenever our schools suffer, that hurts all of Meridian Township," said Meridian Township Treasurer, Julie Brixie.
