MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - A new house bill that would amend Michigan election law's has been passed.

The election reform law allows the county Clerk to handle qualified voter files, upcoming elections when the office of the Clerk suddenly becomes vacant, and allow city or township to enter into an agreement with the county for election administration duties.

The bill will begin Jan. 1 and the State Bureau of Elections or county Clerk may enter into a written agreement.

Meridian Township Clerk, Brett Dreyfus says that he has the option to not participate, and Meridian Township will opt out of this bill.

Dreyfus also said that Meridian Township will not be changing anything because his staff has been running elections successfully for decades.

The bill specifies that an agreement would not be effective unless approved by the city or township.
