In Her Cups, Bras for a Cause Auction for Women's Center of Greater Lansing

LANSING - The Women's Center of Greater Lansing held their 5th annual In Her Cups, Bras for a Cause Art Auction on November 8. The event raised over $5,000 for the center through a combination of ticket sales, sponsorships and auction items. The money goes towards all of the services provided by the women's center, including doctor and prescription copays, counseling, support groups and even preparation for job interviews.

"Our goal is for all women, who want it, to have an economically self-sustaining job with benefits so they work one job and not two or three in order to take care of themselves and their families," said the executive director for the Women's Center of Greater Lansing, Cindie Alwood. "In order to do that, there is a lot of barriers that need to be overcome in order for someone to achieve that level of self sufficiency."

More than 35 bras were submitted and modeled by the Lansing Mitten Mavens roller derby team.
Some of the bras were either too heavy or had no way of being worn, so they were carried around the room. The event features a "Best of Cup" prize for the bra that receives the most money in their numbered envelope. This year, the prize was won by fashion students from Eaton RESA with a bra made from gears and other mechanical pieces of a clock.
