MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Central Fire Station has been on the books for replacement since 1999 due to the condition of the building. The fire station has holes in the roof and major electrical issues.
According to a Fire Feasibility Study conducted back in March of 2012, it was not worth the money to repair the Central Fire Station.
All of these reasons combined over a number of years resulted in the Township deciding to put the new fire station on the ballot, which Township Treasurer, Julie Brixie, said the new fire station overwhelming passed with around 11,000 votes in the November 2012 election.
In order for the for the new fire station to move forward, a special use permit was needed. The Planning Commission passed a Special Use Permit, but later was appealed by residents.
When notifying the public about the fire station hearing, the Township made a mistake by not fully providing residents with information needed.
“We’re also supposed to include written language that written comments can be submitted to the township and give the address of where those comments are submitted," said Brixie. "We did everything except we did not give the address for the township offices."
"Of course everyone wants a fire station, but they that want this mess," said Susan Simkin, Resident. "Which is going to be cost overrun, and cost the township a lot of extra money."
The Township Board decided to send the fire station back before the Planning Commission so the public can voice their opinions. The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on Monday, November 25th.
