MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - During the Okemos Library Renovations, something was discovered in the walls of the restrooms. Workers discovered asbestos and were required to notify the Department of Environment Quality. The Township has hired a different contractor to come in and remove the asbestos but it is more of a nuisance than a money or safety problem.
"I don't think so. [There was] so little of it and it was behind a wall, it wasn't exposed at all. It was actually inside the wall where the piping was so I don't think that was any exposure to anybody from that asbestos in the building," said the Director of Public Works and Engineering, Raymond Severy.
According to Severy, there is enough to be worked on in the building, it will not set back any construction except in the restrooms. The library is still on schedule to reopen at the beginning of 2014. The construction should be done in December and the staff will come in to restock the shelves afterwards and prepare the library for its reopening.
