MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - On November 5, voters in Meridian Township are going to have a chance to vote on a request by the Okemos School District for a seven and a half million dollar bond. The bond will go toward technology, security, and transportation for the district.

Dean Bolton, co-chair of the Okemos Citizens Millage Committee, said, "The primary piece of the bond is providing our children with learning devices that will enable them to become 21st century learners."

Bolton also said the proposal for this bond includes a one-to-one program, where each student will receive an age-appropriate learning device.

"Our students in the K-12 environment will be given some type of computer, whether it's a notebook or an iPad... That's to be determined," said Catherine Ash, Okemos Schools Superintendent. "But all of our students will have access to that."

Not only would the bond grant equal access to technology, but Ash said it would work to keep students and staff even safer as well.

"We're looking at putting electronic door locks among all of our doors externally and internally," Ash said. "We want to have a better locking system."

In addition to the secure locks, Ash said the bond would allow schools to put more security cameras into place.

Ash added that the bond would provide more transportation and prevent Okemos Schools from having to lease buses again next year.

"It would give us seven buses for our bus fleet, which would run more efficiently and cost effectively," Ash said.

So far, Township Clerk Brett Dreyfus said there are more than 1500 absentee ballots in. Residents can also have the chance to vote on Nov. 5 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

"All they need to do is bring a picture ID, state ID, driver's license and they'll be all set," Dreyfus said.

Residents can vote at precincts 6 through 15 and precinct 17 as well.
