MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Meridian Township Board meeting on Oct. 15 was full of residents wanting to voice their opinions on the Human Relations Ordinance and Appeal for the new Fire Station.
First, the 2014 recommended budget passed unanimously and then the Human Relations Ordinance ended up passing with a vote of 4-3 as well.
"I've heard this described as feel-good legislation and one can infer that is is, therefore, less important since we aren't talking about a state-wide scope but rather a local scale," a public comment about the Human Relations Ordinance. "For those of us in the LGBT community, however, every step forward or backward is significant and every moment of inaction is equally significant as a step backward."
Trustee Angela Wilson made an amendment that got passed at the meeting as well, which starts fines for a first offense at $150.
Lastly, the new fire station was supposed to break ground in early October, but it is getting sent back to the Meridian Township Planning Commission.
The next Meridian Township Board meeting will take place Nov. 7 because the Election will be held on Nov. 5.
