MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Michigan House Legislature has approved SB-25 and it is now going to the Senate.
This bill deals with mistakes made on tax rolls regarding principle residence exemptions.
Current law allows people to file an affidavit from up to 3 years to claim these exemptions that were mistakenly left out.
If SB-25 passes then an affidavit could be filed for any year if it is a "qualified error". Owners are to be repaid in 30 days.
"It seems reasonable to, I think most people, that there is a time limit on these things. If you are filling your paperwork and you do it wrong an you make a mistake on it and you don't file paperwork, there should be a time limit on how far back you can go," said Julie Brixie, Meridian Township Treasurer.
The Michigan Township Association has concerns regarding budget uncertainty and the burden put on municipalities as it moves to the Senate.
