MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The American Heart Association announced new standards for administering CPR.
American Heart determined that after extensive research, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation was unnecessary when conducting CPR.
Meridian Township EMS/Training Chief Bill Priese says that compressions are the most critical aspect of CPR when it comes to maintaining circulation and moving the oxygen that's still in a person's system
Priese mentioned that while a lot of people go slow when they're compressing a victim's chest, they should actually speed things up.
"A lot of times people go slow, and we really need you to go at least a rate of 100," Priese said. "That's why the song 'Staying Alive" is real popular, because it's a beat of about 116 beats per minute, which is perfect for doing CPR."
Priese added that social media now plays a significant role in properly administering CPR, noting you can now download various apps on your smart phone that will aid you in the process.
