LANSING - The Michigan Capital Region branch of Big Brothers Big Sisters has a summer long program currently going on and they need volunteers.
The program is called the 200 bigs in 200 days challenge. The goal is to have 200 "littles" paired up with 200 bigs by the end of the summer. By the first day of the program there were already 90 bigs signed up and that number has continued to rise over the summer. You don't need a college degree to become a big brother or big sister and anyone can volunteer, but the program especially needs men. There is only 1 male for every 6 females that volunteers at the center.
"What we try to do is is always follow the wishes of the littles caregiver and who they want," said Executive Director Dr. Phil Knight. "That's how we create those long strong matches."
The Capital Region Branch was only one of 10 branches to recently receive a federal grant, and has joined force with the Greater Lansing Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to achieve their goal of 200 bigs.
Volunteers are still currently needed to achieve the goal and its a 4-6 hour a week commitment. Knight also said that most big little relationships last up to 42 months and sometimes even longer than that.
