MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - School Districts in Michigan may be altered in the future. That is, if plans from State Superintendent Mike Flanagan go through.

Due to the struggling nature of many school districts across the state, Superintendent Flanagan is suggesting wholesale changes to the current system structure. One of the plans is to have all school districts under one county be operated by that county. One of the more feasible options is to have specific business and technology services be moved to the Intermediate School District level.

If school districts were to be operated under one entity some problems could spring up.

"If you take some of our larger school districts [like Detroit Public Schools] and then triple it in size by adding the rest of Wayne County how do you get successful managing that by going to a county-wide system?" said Mike Wotruba, Deputy Director of the Michigan Association of School Boards.

Locally, Okemos schools are now providing food services for other school districts. A house subcommittee will hold a public hearing on July 31st to discuss a consolidation proposal. But, for consolidation to legally happen it must be voted on by the public.
