MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Township Board recently discussed their payback plan for the a local sewer system at their last meeting.

Back in 2009, the Township engineering staff required the sewer system to be over sized. The sewage system covers a stretch of properties between Cornell Road and Meridian Road. The project cost the Township about $368,000 to complete. The Township's debt to the sewage company has an interest rate on it, and the debt has not been paid back in the last four years. The Board spent only a few minutes discussing the topic at the last meeting before moving on to the next agenda item. Trustee Veenstra said now Board members believe the sewer payment plan was a mistake. Therefore, the Board should not pay for any additional over sizing of sewer systems.

"Given that the first payback district seems to be now recognized as having been a mistake, it would certainly be doubly a mistake to create a second additional payback district which would be on top of the first one," said trustee Veenstra.

The plan was passed by a vote of six to one over Veenstra's objections.
