UPDATE: LANSING - Keeping and receiving assistance from the state might not be so easy as it seems.

Michigan Lawmakers are considering a bill where those who are applying for and receiving welfare may have to take a drug test.

The idea was considered by a house committee.

Testing and screening would only apply to recipients who are at least eighteen or older.

Although there are some people who feel that the welfare system is abused by those who are on drugs, they feel that there should be some sort of accommodation made for recipients and applicants who take drugs legally.

"I believe when you talk about drugs, I think it should be a little more outlining and detailed on what drugs should be tested for for welfare individuals," said Lanea Williamson, East Lansing resident.

A bill similar to this one was approved last year in the house, but did not make it pass the senate.
