UPDATE:
MERDIAN TOWNSHIP - In the midst of team tryouts, about sixty high schools girls are trying to out to make the Haslett girls varsity tennis team.
With such a large team, Coach Henry Brunnschweiler is finding exhibition matches and hosting extra practices to allow everyone playing time. Out of the sixty girls trying out, a varsity and junior varsity team will be made at the end of the process.
"The tryout process usually lasts about anywhere from three days to a week," Brunnschweiler said. "Also, we've got some out standing returning players this year."
Two of the top high school single's players in the state of Michigan, Senior Emmy Virkus and Junior Shey Donohue will be returning to the team again this year, after leading the team last year. A total of twelve girls are played in a competition and this season Virkus and Donaohue are expected to become stronger players and leaders, along with freshman Hannah Vogelsang.
"I think we've got a really good shot returning some real experienced singles players and a lot of doubles teams," said Brunnschweiler. "We're looking for a lot of success this year with our girls team.
The team's goals for this year are to win the CAAC Red league tournament, the regional tournament, and place at least somewhere in the top half at the state tournament in June.
"We're pretty positive about our opportunity this year," said Brunnschweiler. "We should be among the top teams in the area competing with others and then hopefully that will extend throughout the season."
