MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Meridian Township Fire Department responded to a call at 9:01 p.m. to a trailer fire at Winslow Trailer Park at the corner of Van Atta Road and Grand River Avenue in Okemos. When fire fighters arrived on the scene, there was heavy smoke and flames visible from the structure.

Due to the location of the fire, Meridian Fire activated the Ingham County Tanker Task Force to transport water from the nearest hydrant. One resident was able to exit without injury, while a second resident was found deceased in the residence.

“The fire and subsequent fatality are under investigation; we do not suspect foul play,” stated Fire Chief Fred Cowper. “We want to thank everyone for their assistance in working together to extinguish the fire.”

Meridian Fire was assisted by NIESA Ambulance, Williamston Fire, Webberville Fire, East Lansing Fire, Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, Lansing Fire Box 23 Club, and Meridian Township Police.

Fire investigators remain on scene working to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
