UPDATE:
MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - In the past, the recreation services in Williamston has been provided through a non-profit parent volunteer organization called the Red Cedar Recreation Association. This association was operated through Williamston Schools but ties were somehow cut between the Association and the School. So the Association went to the City of Williamston to ask them to provide community recreation.
The City of Williamston came to Meridian Township's Parks and Recreation Department for information on how to provide recreation services to their community. The City found that Meridian Township already had youth sports programs in place so two years ago, they proposed a contract with Meridian Township.
"How can we share services? How can communities work together so they're not overlapping in administration and those kinds of things," Parks and Rec Director LuAnn Maisner says, "So we put a proposal together that was accepted."
The agreement said that Meridian Township's staff will operate many of the youth sports for Williamston for a registration fee of $2,800. The duties were no real issue since the Township already had youth programs in place. The agreement started two years ago and will likely be renewed for the upcoming sports season.
