BAC Levels May Cause Michigan
Millions in Road Funding

UPDATE: LANSING - The current blood alcohol content level, 0.08, is set to expire in October 2013.

"The Federal government originally had legislation in 2000 encouraging states to adopt a BAC level of 0.08. So, the Federal government said that states had to adopt this legislation by 2003 or they will lose some of their Federal funded road repairing dollars," said Michigan State Representative Andrea LaFontaine.

As a reaction to the legislation Michigan issued a sunset on the legislation, a sunset is once ten years have passed the legislation has to be immediately revisited as soon as that sunset is up, according to Representative LaFontaine.

"If legislation decides to do nothing than the BAC level will immediately go back up to 0.10. So that is what the bill does, it eliminates the sunset and will keep the BAC level at 0.08,"
said Representative LaFontaine.

If the bill is not passed by October 2013 Michigan's BAC level will not only go up but Michigan will also forfeit around 50 million dollars in road funding.
