UPDATE:
LANSING - If you're a smoker then you might want to reconsider applying for a job at McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital. The hospital has recently joined the ranks of very few businesses in Michigan that are screening applicants for nicotine alone with testing for other drugs. The applicant will not be eligible for hire for ninety days if nicotine is found in their bodies during testing. The response to this new practice has been mixed.
Sparrow Hospital has been a local leader in promoting healthy lifestyles and practices. John Foren of the Marketing Department at Sparrow Health System in Lansing explained the policy. He says that the policy is not illegal and the hospital will not be terminating their employees who already smoke. However, they will provide them with resources to help them quit. The goal is to maintain a healthy environment for all their workers and patients.
