UPDATE:
MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - A total of 15 log jams had been identified at various spots along the Red Cedar River, and this annual event is where volunteers in Meridian Township come together to help clear out those areas. Some of those volunteers included the President of the Lansing Oar and Paddle Club, Jay Hanks, members of MSU Lamda Chi Alpha Fraternity, Brian Van Order who is the owner of Michigan Demolition and Excavation, and other community members.
The volunteers all gathered at the Harris Nature Center, where they were then broken up into smaller groups and assigned an area along the river to clean. Some of the groups would canoe to their areas and others would travel by foot. The goal was to clear any fallen trees, twigs, or any other natural debris that had caused an obstruction along the river, making navigation difficult.
The event went from 9am to 2pm and was a great success. The Red Cedar River Cleaning began in 1997 and since then has turned into a community event that has grown in number of volunteers over the years.
