UPDATE:
LANSING - Governor Rick Synder recently passed the Pledge of Allegiance Bill stating that every Michigan public school classroom must have a flag present in the classroom and an opportunity for the pledge to be recited each morning.
"This legislation provides one more way to help introduce students to the importance of civics," Snyder said. According to michigan.gov, the requirement takes effect for the 2013 school year. All children will have the opportunity to say the pledge, but no one will be required if they or their parents object.
In many Michigan classrooms, like the ones at Rayla Elementary, students already recite each morning. But in some classroom schools cannot afford to purchase a U.S flag. Some lawmakers express concern that cash-strapped schools cannot afford the flags and say it thwarts local control, according to the Associate Press.
The House Fiscal Agency says Michigan joins 43 states asking public schools to recite the pledge each day.
