UPDATE:
LANSING - The Michigan Department of Transportation also known as MDOT is adding an auxiliary lane along northbound US-127 between the I-496 ramps and the exit M-43 (Saginaw Street/Grand River Avenue).
MDOT's spokesperson, Kari Arend, says "this will help ramp traffic in the area move on and off a lot smoother and a lot safer when the project is done."
The exit to M-43 is closed and all traffic is being detoured using the Kalamazoo street. The project started right after Memorial day but all the lanes will be back open at the end of the August.
In addition to another lane, MDOT is updating more than 700 highways sings. Updating signs is suggested every five years to make them brighter and easier to see especially at night times.
This $1.2 million upgrading project has already begun and crews have been replacing sings on I-96 and I-69.
"By upgrading signs, people can see them better at night because we increase the font size so all in all it will be more safer for the motorists," Arend added.
The highway project started in the spring and expected to be done by end of this summer.
When both of the projects are done, MDOT is planning on adding another auxiliary lane on southbound US-127 to help traffic move along.
