911 Dispatch Center Opens

UPDATE: LANSING - With many years of development, Ingham County has officially opened a new 911 Dispatch Center for emergencies.

The new 911 Dispatch Center is now the second largest public safety answering post in the state of Michigan. According to the Director of the Ingham County 911 Dispatch Center, Lance Langdon, they have been working a long time to get the center to the point where it is now.

"Employees now are getting people the help that they need whether it's police, fire or EMS. They are servicing the people of Ingham County," said Langdon.

To be a 911 Dispatcher, training lasts 9 months to a year. There are a total of 45 dispatchers employed currently and the center hopes to employ 11 more. With the center combining two dispatches, employees now are from the East Lansing and Lansing centers.

The Meridian Township Police Chief, Dave Hall, says that because of combining two dispatches, there will be reduction in costs for residents.

"I have heard an estimated million dollars a year will be saved. So that is going to be good when we can save taxpayer money," said Hall.

The center is LEED certified, which means that it has met certain criterias as far as energy efficiencies.
