UPDATE: MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Meridian Township Environmental Commission is working with community environmental groups to encourage residents to use active transportation.

The Mid-Michigan Active Transportation Coalition, Friends of Meridian Pathways and other groups are promoting biking, walking, canoeing and using mass-transit as transportation methods instead of driving cars.

Richard Brown, an active member of the League of Michigan Bicyclists believes in giving residents viable options to participate in active transportation.

"We saw the success of the downtown Okemos celebration a few weeks ago. We offered valet bike parking during it and had a great, great turn out. At one time as many as 65 bikes parked there," Brown said.

Brown says if residents have reliable options to bike or walk, like bike racks and walking paths, the use of cars can be curbed.

There are ongoing meetings being held with different community groups to continue promoting active transportation in Meridian Township.
