UPDATE:
INGHAM COUNTY - Judges now have the option of sentencing minor offenders to clean up roadkill instead of sending them to jail.
The Ingham County Sheriff's Office recently announced a new program called D.A.R.T. which stands for "Dead Animal Recovery Team." This team will utilize people sentenced to the program to clean up county streets.
"I know there's a lot of dead animals out there that we never got to, and people need to understand that we're not going to be able to gets every one of them." explained Ingham County Sheriff Gene L. Wriggelsworth, "But I think this will be a good way to help clean up some of them and also is a good way to help impact jail overcrowding. And I give alternating sentencing programs for the judges, so it works for everybody".
Sentenced individuals are driven around by volunteer deputies as they clean the animal bodies off of roads. The D.A.R.T. team tries to recover all reported animals but can currently only go out every Saturday.
Residents can report dead animals by calling the Sheriff's Office at 517-676-8220.
