UPDATE:
MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - On Saturday volunteers gathered to build a garden in a subsidized housing community.
Senior citizens and disabled residents living in Grange Acres have been given a garden. Since March, plans have been discussed to build a garden here that includes raised beds for the handicapped. These raised beds will allow residents in wheelchairs to plant without having to get on the ground. Tenants are provided with some seeds and can use the garden to grow vegetables or flowers.
The leader of the project, Sandra Montgomery said, "It will give us a chance to get together and talk and have fun. It will be a teaching thing, we will be learning more and more about the gardens and doing gardens organically and we will be saving money because we will be raising our own vegetables and they are always better when you do them yourself."
The garden is free to use and open to any resident of Grange Acres who wants to plant. So far 15 tenants will be using the garden and as of Saturday the garden is tilled, raked, and ready to begin
