CHAMP Program

CHAMP Program

UPDATE: OKEMOS - The CHAMP Program at Michigan State is now accepting applications for the fall semester. The CHAMP program allows students in grades 7-9 to complete their high school math curriculum in four semesters. In order for a student to qualify they must first take the ACT or SAT. The class is taught by MSU professors and is designed to raise the academic bar for students who can benefit from a challenge. There is also a counselor on staff to watch their progress.

Kathee McDonald, the Director of Office of GIfted and Talented Education at Michgan State said, "The other thing that they learn is they learn time management. This class only meets on Thursday afternoons from 1-3:30 here on campus and the rest of the week the students are expected to complete the homework problems. Within the course of the four years they will complete something like 12,000 math problems."

Once students are in high shcool they can take AP courses or dual enrollment at MSU. The tuition is 1,000 dollars but students who qualify for reduced lunch can have that cost reduced by 50 percent. Students interested can apply online at gifted.msu.edu under the CHAMP program. The deadline to apply is May 4th.
