OKEMOS - Mark your 2023 calendars: June 23 is National Detroit-Style Pizza Day. This year marked the second ever annual celebration of the Michigan-made delicacy, and Buddy’s Pizza, the possible originator of the pizza variety, celebrated the occasion accordingly.
All 21 Buddy’s locations donated $1 from every pizza sold on National Detroit-Style Pizza Day to The Salvation Army. To expand the reach of their giving, the company partnered with 10 other pizzerias nationwide. Together, Buddy’s and their partners all donated portions of their June 23 sales to local organizations fighting hunger or serving the homeless.
“Buddy’s is not just about existing within a community, it’s about being part of that community,” said Jacob Campbell, Assistant General Manager of the new Buddy’s location in Okemos. “[Buddy’s is] 76 years strong, so we’ve got to be doing something right.”
In addition to donations, Buddy’s Okemos marked the day by hosting the Lansing Lugnuts. Community members were invited to meet the players and mascot Big Lug for photo and autograph opportunities.
“Throughout the season, even in the offseason, we try to get incorporated into the city,” said Lugnuts Marketing and Fan Engagement Manager Amanda Rich. “We’re Lansing proud for sure … it’s great to see [our fans] at the ballpark, but it’s even better when we can connect on that personal level.”
