MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, MI - A new Trader Joe’s specialty grocery store is in the process of construction on Grand River Ave., just across the street from Whole Foods. The project will spread around 13,500 square feet and includes 2.2 acres of property along Grand River Ave. and Northwind Dr.
The project was approved for full demolition of the previous businesses that occupied the lot. A demolition permit was approved during the first week of march, and the actual demolition took place shortly after.
This project was first announced during a Zoning Board of Appeals meeting back in December of 2021. During the meeting the Board approved a variance request to exceed the maximum allowed parking spaces in the location. This request put maximum parking in the lot above township ordinances.
“This is because they have data that shows the amount of turnover they have is substantially higher than most traditional retail outlets. Therefore, they need additional parking so it’s not to cause undue burden on surrounding properties as well,” Tim Schmitt, community planning and development director, said in his announcement video.
Completion of the project is expected sometime in 2023.
Trader Joe’s is a specialty grocery store that you will not find typical big brand products. However, you may find new, unique products in all departments. Additionally, Trader Joe’s separates themselves from sales and membership cards, instead the chain promises fair everyday prices.
