Slavery To Freedom Event

EAST LANSING, MICHIGAN - This February, Marita Gilbert, Associate Dean of Diversity and Campus Inclusion in Michigan State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine, met with HOMTV to discuss this February's event, called "Slavery to Freedom." This was a collection of speakers during the event, including Yusef Salaam, a member of the exonerated Central Park Five.

In regards to “Slavery to Freedom,” and when asked why he was chosen as a speaker, Marita Gilbert stated “One of the things that I’m trying to do is help this series reach beyond the bounds of our campus, that it’s not just something that we repeat every year in February.”

These impactful speakers met with classes in order to speak on topics such as mass incarceration. Marita dissected her goals and who planned on speaking for this February’s events, with each speaker being hand selected.

For February being Black History Month, Marita Gilbert stated that history not only shaped who we are today. But history is also currently impactful and vitally important in our daily lives.
