MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, MI - Michigan's first big snowfall of the season covered most of the state and its reminiscence still remains. The state's unpredictable winter weather means residents are tasked with the responsibility to shield their homes from the frigid weather.

It’s no secret to longtime Michiganders that pipes are at risk of freezing in the winter season. First, it is important to know where your water lines are. Check any and all areas such as basements, attics, garages, or even under kitchen cabinets. Any water pipes in these areas, cold or warm, should be insulated.

For extreme temperatures, it is helpful to open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow for warmer air around the pipes, as well as keeping garage doors closed.

For those who don’t mind raising their water and heating bill for a season, try leaving your tap water dripping and keeping your heat on through the night.

If by the time you're reading this your pipes have already fallen victim to the low temperatures there are a few tricks that can help. First, remember to keep your faucet open, running water will help melt the pipes and speed up the process. You may also apply heat to the frozen section of the pipe by wrapping it with a heating pad, using an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater or by wrapping the pipes with towels soaked in hot water.

Under no circumstances should you use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove or other open flame device.

If you have no luck with these tricks or are unable to locate your frozen pipe, do not hesitate to call a licensed plumber.

The Meridian Township Fire Department is asking residents to be aware of their furnaces and nearby fire hydrants as well. Clearing a path from the street to the hydrant and clearing any snow on or around the hydrant will allow for easier access for first responders.

“Firefighting in winter months is much more difficult and labor intensive. By having members of the public keep their fire hydrants clear and ready to use, that’s one less thing we have to dedicate resources to in the critical early minutes of a fire incident,” said Tavis Millerov, Meridian Township Fire Marshal.

Take care of your furnace by ridding all vents and meters of snow. Fire Marshall Millerov warns residents to be careful not to damage vent pipes with snow blowers or shovels in the process.
