LANSING - Medical practitioners are feeling hopeful as the first results from the vaccine trial were released on Sept. 20.

This trial, for children ages 5 to 11 showed that the vaccine is safe for children and that they will show antibodies against COVID-19 after receiving the vaccine.

According to Pfizer, the trial used a smaller dosage (10 micrograms) of the vaccine compared to people 12 and older (30 micrograms). The smaller dosage was used to help protect young children and lessen the side effects, however the side effects were found comparable between young children and young adults who received the vaccine.

Albert Bourla, the chairman and CEO of Pfizer said in a statement that they are planning on submitting their findings to the FDA as soon as possible.

"We are eager to extend protection afforded by the vaccine to this younger population, subject to regulatory authorization, especially as we track the spread of the Delta variant and the substantial threat it poses to children," Bourla said.

If the FDA does approve the vaccine for younger children, parents might have to wait until the end of 2021.

Pfizer is also testing vaccines for children under 5 years old, with results possibly coming later this year.
