LANSING MI. - Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that July will be celebrated as Parks and Recreation Month. This proclamation aims to raise awareness in communities about local parks and recreation.

“Parks and Recreation is a celebration of all the great things that go on in communities,” Meridian Township Parks and Recreation Director, LuAnn Maisner, said, “Parks and Recreation plays a vital role in communities not just here but nationwide.”

America has been celebrating July as Parks and Recreation month since 1985. This national celebration has helped spread awareness regarding local parks and recreations for years.

According to Michigan.gov, Michigan’s state parks and recreation system contains103 state parks and recreation areas encompassing a total acreage of 300,000 acres.

Within these state parks, forest campgrounds, historic buildings, archeological sites, state harbors, boat launches, and 1,300 miles of trails are available.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis found that outdoor recreation generates 124,000 jobs in Michigan and provides $4.7 billion in wages and salaries.

During COVID-19 local Parks and Recreation systems became valuable as people searched for new leisure activities. Local parks offer fresh air and new hobbies such as hiking, picnics, fishing, hunting, and swimming.

Parks and recreation staff throughout Michigan consist of Park rangers, customer service, park commission, visitor experience, and more.

Maisner said, “with all of us working together and our community working right along with us, that’s why we’re celebrating Parks and Recreation month.”

During This month, communities are encouraged to take a trip to their favorite parks, or visit a new destination, to take advantage of what Michigan’s Parks and Recreation system has to offer.
