MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Meridian Township has experienced an increase in mosquitoes this summer, but the rest of lower Michigan is experiencing the mayhem as well.
In the spring, very few mosquitoes were seen due to lack of rainfall, however with more storms and rain, the mosquitoes are now able to thrive.
Meridian Township’s Director of Parks and Recreation LuAnn Maisner said that although the mosquitoes are bothersome, the Township and residents can take action against the insects.
“We do contract to spray a few park areas as well as township building areas and these contractors are also available for residents to hire to treat their own properties,” Maisner said.
She also gave residents some recommendations:
-Mosquito Squad
-Knock ‘em Out Pest Control
-Orkin
And others can be found online.
There are also other ways to reduce the number of mosquitoes on your property. Mosquito eggs can be found on standing water, so replacing water in birdbaths and getting rid of water in your yard could help.
And of course, having a can of mosquito repellent might make the outdoors more peaceful. Mosquitoes typically survive for two weeks and Maisner said this problem will be gone soon.
“The good news is that mosquitoes don’t stick around for very long and we’ll be out of this hatch before summer is gone,” Maisner said.
