Meridian Township Clerk Discusses Upcoming May Special Election

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Meridian Township is holding a special election on May 4, specifically for those in the Okemos School District. The ballot will include two proposals, one regarding a millage renewal and the other about creating a sinking fund for the construction or repair of school buildings.

You must be 18 years of age by election day to be eligible to vote, and you must be a resident of Meridian Township for at least 30 days prior to voting.

Until April 19, voter registration can be done in the following ways:
-Online at Michigan.gov/VoterRegistration
-At a Secretary of State Branch Office
-At the Ingham County Clerk’s Office
-At the Meridian Township Clerk’s Office
-At any state agency that provides public assistance or services to people with disabilities
-Through a voter registration drive
-By mailing in a completed voter registration application postmarked by April 19

After April 19, you cannot register anywhere other than in person at the Meridian Township Clerk’s Office.

Voters also have various options for submitting a ballot. Anyone can vote absentee without a reason, but it is important to know that if you are on the Permanent Absentee Voter list, you still need to submit an application for voting absentee. The application will get sent automatically to everyone on the list, but each person is required to fill it out before receiving a ballot.

Online and mail requests for an Absentee Voter Ballot must be received by the Township or city clerk no later than 5 p.m. on April 30. You can also request an Absentee Voter Ballot in person at the clerk’s office up until 4 p.m. on May 3.

In person voting can be done at your assigned precinct on election day. If you requested an absentee ballot and then decide to vote in person, you can choose to have your absentee ballot “spoiled”.

You can also register to vote on the day of the election, but this must be done in person at the Clerk’s office.
