MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, MICHIGAN - Marketplace on the Green, the new Farmers' Market venue in Meridian Township, was one of four statewide parks to receive the 2021 Facility Design Award from the Michigan Recreation and Park Association. The venue features a U-shaped 14,650 square foot pavilion with a courtyard featuring a children’s playground, performance stage, restrooms, and bicycle parking. Plenty of sustainable features are included in the design, such as rain gardens, solar panels, LED light fixtures, and more.
LuAnn Maisner, Director of Parks and Recreation for Meridian Township, is looking forward to Marketplace on the Green being a great community gathering place, not just a Farmers' Market.
The Farmers' Market has been open since May during the shutdown and throughout the summer and fall. On the first and third Saturday each month from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, the market has been successfully open and running throughout COVID.
“Our vendors have to wear a mask and fill out the survey. They all have their temperatures taken. We require the visitors to wear masks. It made a difference, and we were able to stay open and stay safe. We plan on continuing those protocols," said Maisner.
In the future, Marketplace on the Green hopes to present a variety of events, such as concerts, picnics, parties, and the addition of an ice rink making use of artificial ice.
