LANSING - On January 29th, Michigan’s Attorney General Dana Nessel announced the release of the Michigan Human Trafficking Commission’s annual report for 2020.

The annual report is released every year, and summarizes the efforts made by the Michigan Human Trafficking Commission throughout the year. The Michigan Human Trafficking Commission utilizes seven different subcommittees in order to do its work. These subcommittees are the Data Collection and Research Committee, the Victim Services committee, the Public Awareness committee, the Policy and Legislation committee, the Courts committee, and the Funding and Resources committee.

The annual report gives an in-depth look and review of each separate committee’s work during 2020.

“Despite the ongoing pandemic, the Michigan Human Trafficking Commission has not lost sight of its objectives and has persevered through these challenging times by continuing to raise awareness, provide trainings and outreach, and pursue opportunities so that out state is better positioned to address human trafficking,” Nessel said. “I commend each member of the Commission for their devoted efforts, and look forward to working with Gov. Whitmer and the Legislature in this new term to advance our legislative proposals and provide additional tools and resources to combat this heinous violation of human rights.”

The report also includes goals and plans for 2021. Some goals for 2021 for the Michigan Human Trafficking commission include working to reintroduce a legislative package equipped with 30 bills addressing issues related to human trafficking, expanding resources available on the newly redesigned Commission webpage, and deploying safe in-person listening sessions for victims of human trafficking that include protocols that are COVID-19 compliant.
