MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin (MI-08) along with members of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus announced an emergency COVID-19 relief package on Tuesday, December 1st.
“For months, I have been vocal in calling on my own leadership in the House, as well as leaders in the Senate and White House, to get back in a room to negotiate a deal –– and I’m glad to see they’re finally re-starting some of those conversations today. With support from Senators and 50 members of Congress on both sides of the aisle, we can, and must get this done.”
The package is broken down into several categories including healthcare, education, student loans, childcare and vaccine development and distribution and testing tracing, etc. at a cost of $908 billion.
Democratic and Republican members of the House of Representatives and the Senate have worked on and supported this package.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Munchin have plans to meet and talk about a stimulus package amongst other things.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel said in a tweet, “For months, Republicans have tried to make bipartisan progress on huge areas of COVID relief where there's no disagreement.”
Slotkin hopes that leaders are able to get relief out before the holidays. Congress has until Dec. 21 to make a decision before they are dismissed for winter recess.
“Our small business owners, teachers, workers, first responders, healthcare workers are doing everything they can to weather this crisis –– and they want to look to Washington and see that we are, too. There is no excuse for not passing a COVID relief package before the winter holidays. It is our fundamental responsibility as legislators,” said Slotkin.
