LANSING - Like many other businesses in Michigan, Capital Area Humane Society has also been affected by the COVID-19 outbreak.
Julia Willson, the President and CEO of Capital Area Humane Society told HOMTV that, "We are still here and functioning in some capacity during the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” initiative, so we are here but we are not open to the public at this time so it has impacted our public offerings including adoptions, intake of animals, and our spay/neuter services are on hold so it has definitely impacted our ability to serve the public."
Capital Area Humane Society is accepting donations and having them dropped off at the front door or having the donations shipped to them. The main donation that they really need is kitten milk replacers, so the milk that they feed their newborn and baby kittens that come in this time of year. They are also looking for laundry detergents, cleaning supplies, dog food, dog treats, cat food, and cat treats.
When asked about how the virus has affected adoptions, Willson told HOMTV, "Unfortunately it has taken quite a toll on our ability to adopt those animals. The adoptions require human interactions, so we are not doing adoptions at this time, so the animals are put in foster care."
Capital Area Humane Society is also answering phone calls about surrendering animals. They are asking people to, "Hold on to their pet that they want to surrender for a few more weeks until they reopen again to the public, because we don't want to overwhelm the shelter with animals that are in emergency situations."
Capital Area Humane Society has a pet food bank for residents who are struggling to feed their pets and we don't want their animals to go hungry.
The Humane Society has spring and summer camps for kids, they have had to cancel their spring break camp, but they are not sure yet on the status of their summer camp.
The Capital Area Humane Society will reopen to the public on Monday, April 13.
