MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - On Monday, August 26th, Meridian Township Police Chief Ken Plaga was grabbing coffee at Quality Dairy when he received a call about an elderly woman who had driven off of Grand River Avenue and into Walden Pond.
Chief Plaga was able to respond within 30 seconds and with the help of Sergeant Ed Besonen, the two were able to open the car door and save the woman from the sinking car.
At the September 3rd Meridian Township Board meeting, both members of the Meridian Township Police Department were recognized by the Board and even given a special gift from Quality Dairy: free coffee for one year.
Dive teams from Ingham County Sheriff's Office were able to recover the vehicle from Walden Pond after two failed attempts.
Chief Plaga said that the crash is still under investigation, but the woman has been discharged from the hospital and is okay.
