EAST LANSING - Following the Larry Nassar case, the Michigan State University Museum recently held a panel discussion focusing on the media's role in covering sexual assault.

Local journalists, who were a part of the panel, discussed their newsroom policies for covering these cases such as how and when to use the word survivor in a story.

Grace French, a panelist who is also a member of The Army of Survivors, explained why she thought the Nassar case received the media attention it did.

"There was a huge amount of local coverage and national attention," French said. "I think this definitely has to do with the fact that our case comes after the #MeToo movement began. Our case never could have gone as far as it did if it weren't for the olympic gymnasts involved and the fact that a majority of us were upper-middle class white girls."
