100 Million Dollar Plan to Develop The Village of Okemos Revealed

100 Million Dollar Plan to Develop The Village of Okemos Revealed

OKEMOS - The Village of Okemos is being redeveloped with a plan of 100 million dollars.

At the intersection of Hamilton and Okemos Roads stand vacant buildings and empty lots. During the late 1800's the area, known as The Village of Okemos, was a thriving spot for new businesses. As the economy took a hit so did the village. Now almost all that's left is a Thai Restaurant and Barber Shop.

It is until now that developers have come to the area with a plan to give life back to the area. At the February 19 Township Board Meeting, Robert Gibbs gave a presentation, on behalf of True North Properties, regarding the conceptual plan.

The idea is to create a walk-able community block system with wide side walks. Their is hope for multiple unique retail stores and restaurants. Apartment complexes will be built to offer living for one to two member families which will have large parking structures available for convenience.

The Township Board was eager to hear the details of the plan. Supervisor Styka got nostalgic hearing about the redevelopment.

"I have been in the Township since 1987," Styka said. "When I first moved here my wife and I would take our children about a mile down to the four corners (The Village of Okemos). There was a drug store ice cream parlor pizza shop and hardware of course. There was things to do and a reason to be there . I see Mr. Gibbs is trying to give us that again."

The developers are also looking to attract a young audience to the community. An office space and multiple service business will be offered.

The area has been marked with environmental contamination. The funding for the area will help eliminate the hazardous waste.

Developers took comments and recommendations from the Township Board about the redevelopment. A more detailed concept plan will be presented in a few months.
