UPDATE: MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The original settlement agreement between Wal-Mart and Meridian Township gave Wal-Mart three years to do one of two things. Wal-Mart could expand the store by approximately 24,000 square feet, or they could leave the building it's same size and do a total remodeling of it within a three year period.

As of the February 7th board meeting, Wal-Mart had not done either one of the two options and with the original agreement expiring this month on the 23rd, Wal-Mart came before the board and asked for an extension that would run through February of 2013. Otherwise, if the original agreement expired, they would have to start a new application process which is lengthy and costly.

"I just think that they left it alone and didn't look at it because they had other issues," said Mark Kieselbach, Director of Community Planning & Development for Meridian Township. "Then realizing this agreement is going to end, it has sort of jogged them into doing something with this store, whether they will do anything or not."

The board did agree to extend the settlement agreement for one more year, until February of 2013. This will give Wal-Mart the opportunity to decide what they actually want to do with their store.

The board has not heard back from Wal-Mart since the extension was granted on what they are planning to do at this point. Whether they will do the remodel or the expansion.
