UPDATE:
LANSING - In lieu of a parade, the city of Lansing held a Veterans Day Celebration in the Pattengill Middle School auditorium. Many Veterans and current servicemen and servicewomen were in attendance.
The morning began with coffee and conversation. Hats, uniforms, and medals were visible in every direction. Outside, Vietnam Veteran Bruce Whipple displayed his mobile military museum. His personal belongings from 1969-1970 were there for all to check out, from clothing and pins, to photos and mailings sent from Vietnam, his display caught the attention of many attendees.
Mayor Virg Benero presented two World War II Veterans Keys to the City, while other Vietnam Veterans received medals.
A lot of stories were told, some about war, some about the value of the Military and what it means to be in it.
The ceremony ended with George Allen playing "taps" and the Glen Erin Pipe Band reverberating the room with their rendition of "Amazing Grace."
Ronald Wilson, also a Vietnam Veteran, said it best when he mentioned the importance of remembering those who have fought and are fighting for this country. He said that fighting in war is something that bonds Veterans for life, and it is a bond that, he felt, mandated his presence at the ceremony.
The day brought many tears to many eyes, but also laughs and smiles.
